When a GIF is the right format, and when it is not
GIFs play everywhere without a click: in email, in chat, in documentation, in places that will not autoplay a video. That makes them good for short loops, a product in motion, a UI interaction, a reaction. They are a poor fit for anything long, colourful or with sound. A 30-second clip is usually several times larger as a GIF than as an MP4, and looks worse. If the destination plays video, a short muted MP4 is almost always the better choice.
